Windows Registry Cleaner Programs

If you are worried about the way your computers operating system is functioning and are getting errors accompanied by sluggish performances then it is surely time to invest in the services of a free registry cleaner that will rid this area of problems and other harmful entries that may be causing issues with how it operates. The registry exists in all 32 and 64 bit windows operating systems and is crucial as it acts as a repository where information can be accessed by windows which needs to be read to allow programs to boot, settings to be loaded and tasks to be carried out by the pc user. The contents of the registry used to be located in one single file on the old windows 3.1 system which was called reg.dat but is now incorporated along with the other ini files into two files on the modern versions of windows which are the user.dat and system.dat files that hold computer and user specific information. As we utilize our computers more often and add more software this will subsequently cause configuration entries to change in the registry which will become old and outdated in due time. A large amount of computer users don't know about this database and its function but its importance can't be emphasized enough as well as part that free registry cleaner tools play in keeping it healthy, fully operational and optimized and this is something that needs to be discussed on a more in depth basis. Basically all that you need to understand is that every time you change, edit or alter system settings, profiles, hardware or software on a particular pc it will make new entries in the registry and will those that already exist. Unfortunately what we don't realize is that continuous changes will have negative impacts in the future because you face problems like the formation of missing file paths and old data, deleted files, build up of old settings and empty keys within the registry which require a pc cleaner to be repaired one hundred percent.

In order to run the Microsoft registry editor you will need to run the command regedit.exe from the start menu which will give you access to the hierarchical structures of this database where you can navigate between keys and manipulate different data. The registry tree has 6 sections which all begin with HKEY indicating that they are top level which in turn links to sub keys and finally values which are the lowest levels. When it comes to the process of a backup it can sometimes be difficult as all files which you need to copy are mostly always in use by windows but there are others ways around this issue. The way to backup you two registry files successfully is to boot you computer to command prompt by pressing F8 and choosing the relevant option. Since these two files are system related and hidden you will have to use the attribute command to remove these restrictions which will then allow you to copy them to an external drive. If you have a windows NT based system then you can do the same but this time you will have to copy all the files from the system32 configuration directory to a disk but bear in mind that you will not be able to do transfer these registry files if it is NTFS formatted. The alternative option to copying files is to export it in which a text document will be compiled with all the data in the registry which is much easier as you can simply import it if the need arises. Windows 98 makes backups every time you successfully boot into windows so if you discover that you have a corrupted registry you can navigate to dos, execute SCAN REG / RE-STORE which will show a command utility that will display any available backups of which you may choose any one.

3 Root Keys Of The Registry

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT is a big branch with a large amount of sub keys and its purpose is to track information relating to file extensions, various different documents and the various applications which are associated with those files.

HKEY_DYN_DATA is in use only on the 98, 95 and ME platforms, holds information which needs to be accessed quickly by windows and contains two sub keys of which one is called configuration manager which has information about the hardware located in the system. The other one is known as perf stats which hold information related to performance with regard to network tools.

HKEY_PERFORMANCE_DATA is not visible in the registry editing utility but deals with performance and runtime information data.

When entering this utility in windows you will have four different options with regard to editing certain data values which are modify, modify binary data, delete and rename which can be executed from the edit menu once a particular item has been selected. It is important to be extremely careful when performing manual configurations to this information as one wrong change can crash the system which is why registry cleaner programs are the easy and recommended solution. One should keep in mind that although a free registry cleaner will fix and repair many errors and problems it may not repair everything as there are sometimes things which require removal with other tools like a spyware removal program which will subsequently eliminate malicious keys which were created from virus related infections. These pc tools are not programmed to recognize these types of problems and this is why you should also conduct spyware removal scans to help the situation further.
